Chromite Recovery by Magnetic Separation: A Study Using Aksa Magnet WHIMS Technology

Introduction


In chromite beneficiation processes, recovering valuable minerals from tailings is of great importance. In recent years, magnetic separation technologies have been increasingly used in these processes.


In a conducted study, chromite recovery was tested using the Aksa Magnet YMS-10 Vertical Ring and Pulsating High Gradient Magnetic Separator (WHIMS). Within the scope of the study, the equipment was rented from Aksa Magnet, and laboratory- and pilot-scale experiments were carried out.


Scope and Methodology of the Study


In the research, low-grade material containing Cr₂O₃ remaining in the tailings of a chromite beneficiation plant was processed. The process flow included the following steps:


  • Pre-treatment with Hydrocyclone: The tailings material was classified according to particle size.

  • Magnetic Separation with WHIMS: Magnetic and non-magnetic phases were separated using the Aksa Magnet YMS-10 unit.

  • Final Beneficiation with Shaking Tables: The pre-concentrate was subjected to shaking table tests to increase the chromite grade.


During the experiments, current values ranging between 100 and 400 amperes were tested, and the most efficient operating conditions were determined.


Results Obtained


The main results obtained from the study are as follows:


  • From tailings containing 3.40% Cr₂O₃, a concentrate with 47% Cr₂O₃ was obtained.

  • As a result of magnetic separation and shaking table tests, a recovery rate between 40% and 70% was achieved.

  • The optimum current value was determined to be 300 amperes.


These results demonstrate that WHIMS technology is an effective method for chromite recovery. They also show that magnetic separation processes can play an important role in improving tailings management in beneficiation plants.


Conclusion and Evaluation

This study shows that the Aksa Magnet WHIMS unit can be successfully used for chromite beneficiation tailings. Pilot-scale experiments provided critical data for optimizing magnetic separation processes and delivered valuable insights for future large-scale applications.
